Opening Sequences and Enigma - 'Inception'

The second film I will be looking at which creates a sense of enigma is the thriller 'Inception'.

  • Enigma is created in the beginning, when a confused man wakes up on the beach and it isn't explained to the audience why he has done so
  • Enigma is evident in the opening when an armed guard lifts up the shirt of the man passed out on the beach and finds a gun which generally 'normal people' don't have
  • Enigma is portrayed when the scene cuts from a poor drunk man on the beach to a lavish dining room without explaining why
  • Enigma is shown when two armed men carry the estranged man from the beach into the lavish dining room and place him roughly down on the chair without informing the audience what crime he has committed
  • Furthermore, enigma is created when the scene cuts from a beaten up man to the now educated man in an expensive suit and well groomed face without showing how he has done so
